When arriving at a Bangkok airport at 23:00, what are the ways to get into the city? Even when taking a taxi, the amount paid is not just the fare shown on the meter. This breaks down what is paid when taking a taxi from the airport to the city, and summarizes the transportation running late at night and which floor to board each from.
Available vehicles change depending on the arrival time
Suppose I arrive at Suvarnabhumi Airport at 23:00. At this time, the airport buses have already stopped, and the ways to get to the city are fewer than on days arriving in the afternoon.
The airport train runs until 24:00. However, the official information only shows the operating hours and does not state what time the last train leaves, so I check at the station.
So the first thing I look at is not the price. It is which options are still running at the time I arrive. On days I arrive at Don Mueang Airport, the rides I take change.
Available rides change depending on the arrival time
The horizontal scale shows the time, and the bands show the operating hours of each ride.

01The two options running 24 hours are meter taxis and AOT Limousines. The airport train runs from 5:30 to 24:00, the S1 airport bus runs from 4:30 to 22:00, and the Limo Bus runs from 8:00 to 22:00.
I did not include taxi apps in the time chart above. This is because I could not find an official page showing their operating hours.
However, Grab, a taxi app usable in Thailand, states that it accepts bookings even early in the morning or late at night. It is not written whether a car will come if called on the spot late at night.
What is paid for airport taxis in Bangkok is not just the meter amount
When going to the city by meter taxi, the payment is divided into three parts. The amount on the meter, the airport surcharge, and the toll fee when passing through the expressway.
These three have different names and ways of being determined. The amount on the meter changes with the distance driven, the airport surcharge is added only when boarding from the airport, and the expressway toll fee is added only when passing through.
Even from the same airport, payments differ by ride

02There are 3 things to pay for with a metered taxi, and just the ticket fare for the airport train. Riding with a taxi app means paying tollway fees if taking the tollway, in addition to the amount on the screen. Any applied surcharges are also paid separately.
1I take a numbered ticket at the 1st floor stand for meter taxis
At Suvarnabhumi Airport, the arrival floor is the 2nd floor, and the meter taxi stand is on the 1st floor. After arriving, I first go down one floor.
There is a ticketing machine at the stand. I take a numbered ticket before getting into a taxi.
2With taxi apps, the fare appears on the screen before riding
When calling a car with the Grab app, the amount appears on the screen before the ride. I can also book in advance by specifying the time I want to ride. However, that amount does not include the expressway toll fee and surcharges.
I call cars using the app at the airport, and I have never boarded from the taxi stand.
The portion for taking the expressway in an app car is added to the amount on the screen after getting off. When I rode in Bangkok, there was a time when a toll fee for an expressway I did not pass through was added. I told the app company that I did not pass through that expressway and had the toll fee refunded.
3AOT Limousines are requested at the counter on the arrival floor
There are cars operated by the airport, called AOT Limousines. The process is to tell the destination and request one at the counter. That counter is on the 2nd floor, the same floor I arrive on.
4The airport train is 45 baht to Phaya Thai Station
There is a train station at the airport, and a train called the Airport Rail Link departs from there. From the airport station to the final stop, Phaya Thai Station, the fare is 45 baht and it takes about 26 minutes.
I have also taken the airport train. Unlike cars, the time is not extended by traffic jams.
From Phaya Thai Station, I transfer to a city train. For the train I transfer to, the usable tickets and cards differ by line.

5Airport buses have fixed destinations
The airport buses have fixed destinations. If my destination is not on the bus route, I get off halfway and transfer.
Limo Bus is another type of airport bus and is different from AOT Limousine. At Suvarnabhumi Airport, the Limo Bus stop is in front of Exit 8 on the 1st floor.
The boarding areas are divided by floor and exit number
Getting lost in the airport happens because the boarding areas differ by vehicle. Some can be requested on the arrival floor, while others require going down one floor to board. The train and the S1 bus line are guided by the names of the stations and boarding areas rather than the floor.

When calling with the app, where to go appears on the screen. Where I went was the 1st floor, and there were many guide signs.
The car does not arrive at a fixed parking spot. It was a system where I went to the location on the screen and told the driver where I was. People waiting for cars were also lining up.
Even on the day I requested hotel pickup, I decided the meeting place beforehand. The arrival floor and the floor where the car can pull up are not always the same.

The time it takes from the airport to the city changes depending on the day
The reason the required time for a car is not written in this article is that the driving time changes depending on the day. The only official time given from Suvarnabhumi Airport to the city is about 26 minutes for the airport train.
It is not always empty just because it is morning. The time it took the longest when I moved by car was early in the morning. On the day I took the expressway, I arrived in a shorter time than the day I did not.
Traffic jams occur in the evening. I finish my errands during the day and try to finish moving before the evening.
On the day I arrive at Don Mueang Airport, what to ride changes
There are 2 airports in Bangkok, and the other is Don Mueang Airport. The available vehicles and the fare amounts change depending on the arriving airport.

From what time to what time the vehicles at Don Mueang Airport operate was not in the official guide. On days arriving late at night, I check the signs at the boarding area.
A free bus runs between the two airports. However, only those who meet the conditions can ride.
What to show when boarding from Don Mueang Airport is officially stated. It is not written whether the same items are required when boarding from Suvarnabhumi Airport, so I check at the boarding area.
Organizing the cash on hand before taking a taxi
Metered taxis are paid in cash. Exchanging a large sum at the airport currency exchange yields mostly 1000 baht notes. The fare to the city is less than 1000 baht, so paying with a 1000 baht note requires change.

Common misconceptions
- ❌ Just paying the amount shown on the meter is enough. In reality, boarding from the airport adds a 50 baht airport surcharge, and taking the expressway requires paying that toll separately
- ❌ Nothing is paid other than the amount shown on the app. Grab states that the amount on the screen does not include expressway tolls and surcharges
- ❌ There is a taxi stand on the arrival floor. The metered taxi stand is on the 1st floor, and arrivals are on the 2nd floor. The AOT Limousine is what can be requested on the arrival floor
- ❌ Taking the train to the city is possible even when arriving after 0:00. The airport train runs from 5:30 to 24:00 and does not operate between 0:00 and 5:30. The metered taxi and AOT Limousine are available on the spot during those hours, and the S1 line airport bus also starts operating from 4:30
- ❌ Anyone can ride the free bus connecting the 2 airports. To board from Don Mueang Airport, a passport and a flight ticket departing from Suvarnabhumi within 24 hours of arrival are required.
- ❌ AOT Limousine rates are officially published. It only states that it is a car service operated by the airport, and the amounts are not published
